Storytelling for Cultural Competence

Developing cultural competence is an evolving, dynamic process that takes time and occurs along a continuum.” – Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration

With this view of cultural competence in mind, the 2018 Virtual Conference is just one step in a long journey. We hope it will be a critical step for you, but it is still just one step. To deepen your experience and support your journey over time, we created “Storytelling for Cultural Competence.”

“Storytelling for Cultural Competence” is a learning experience that will help you get started on your cultural competence journey, get the most out of the 2018 Virtual Conference, and carry you forward.

You can get started now by downloading the “Personal Storytelling Journal.”

Storytelling Journal

Personal Storytelling Journal

This guided journaling experience encourages self-knowledge (an important part of cultural competence), cultivates empathy and connection, and provides a space to practice the vulnerability and authenticity required for cultural conversation.  It was designed as a pre-conference activity to prepare you for the 2018 MFLN Virtual Conference, but it can be started or completed at any time.

This journal will help deepen your Virtual Conference experience. It has space for notes and reflections for each conference session with “guiding questions” and quotations provided by the conference presenters.

If you’d like to share your journaling experience with others, please sign-up to join the conversation in the private Storytelling for Cultural Competency discussion forum.

Advocacy Action Plan

The goal of the post-conference experience is to help you continue your cultural competence journey at your own pace, and to support that journey as needed with validation, co-learning, accountability and peer support. Download the plan to work through creating their own cultural competencies, making a plan for working toward those competencies, and reflect on cultural competency as an ever-changing journey.
